Sodium carbonate (soda ash)
is used in manufacture of glass. It is also used as
a water softener, as a pH regulator to maintain stable
alkaline conditions, as an electrolyte in chemistry,
as a descaling agent in boilers, as a wetting agent
to reduce the amount of water needed to extrude the
clay in brick industry, as bonding agent in casting.
It can be used in dyeing with fiber-reactive dyes, sodium
carbonate is used to ensure proper chemical bonding
of the dye with the fibers.
Sodium carbonate is a food additive used as an acidity
regulator, anti-caking agent, raising agent and stabilizer.
It also can be used in toothpastes, where it acts as
a foaming agent, an abrasive, and to temporarily increase
mouth pH.
In a medical application it can be used to reduce swelling.
