Fosfomycin, as bacterial cell
wall synthesis inhibitor, is a broad spectrum antibiotic
belonging to the phosphonate group that has bactericidal
activity against Gram-negative bacteria including Citrobacter
spp., E. coli, Enterobacter spp., K. pneumoniae, P.
aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Slzigella spp., and S.
marcescens, as well as Gram-positive bacteria including
vancomycin resistant enterococci, methicillin-resistant
S. aureus (MRSA), methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA),
and S. pneumoniae.
Fosfomycin has the greatest activity against E. coli,
Proteus spp., Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and S.
marcescens.
It is commonly used in the treatment of uncomplicated
urinary tract infections caused by E. coli.
Fosfomycin is available in both oral (fosfomycin calcium,
Fosfomycin trometamol) and intravenous (fosfomycin disodium).
