Application:
Calcium chloride is strongly hygroscopic, and used as
a desiccant.
Calcium chloride is used as an ice-melting and snow-melting
compound.
Calcium chloride is used as a sequestrant and firming
agent in foods, used as an
electrolyte and has an extremely salty taste, in sports
drinks and other beverages.
It can also be used as a preservative to maintain firmness
in canned vegetables or in
higher concentrations in pickles to give a salty taste
while not increasing the food's
sodium content.
Calcium chloride can be injected as intravenous therapy
for the treatment of hypocalcaemia (low serum calcium).
It can also help to protect the myocardium from dangerously-high
levels of serum potassium in hyperkalemia.
