Chemical Structure:

Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic antimicrobial. it
functions by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis,
it has a very broad spectrum of activity: it is active
against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria
and anaerobes. It is not active against Pseudomonas
aeruginosa or Enterobacter species. It has some activity
against Burkholderia pseudomallei.
Chloramphenicol is active against the three main bacterial
causes of meningitis: Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus
pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae.
