Chemical Structure:
Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is
a lipophilic (fat-soluble), vitamin-like nutrient. It
involved in electron transport and energy production
in mitochondria. It is a natural product of the human
body that is primarily found in the mitochondria, which
are the cellular organelles that produce energy. It
occurs in most tissues of the human body; however, the
highest concentrations are found in the heart, liver,
kidneys, and pancreas. it also stabilizes cell membranes
and acts as an antioxidant.
Coenzyme Q10 supplementation is used primarily in the
treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as elevated
cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, congestive
heart failure, cardiomyopathy, mitral valve prolapse,
coronary artery bypass surgery, and angina. It has also
been shown to be helpful in diabetes; periodontal disease;
immune deficiency; cancer; as a weight-loss aid; and
muscular dystrophy.
