N-4-[(2-amido-4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-6-terene)methylamino]benzoyl-L-glutamic
acid
Molecular Formula: C19H19N7O6
Molecular Weight: 441.40
Chemical Structure:
Forlic acid (Vitamin B9, Vitamin
Bc, Vitamin M), also called folate, folacin or pteroylglutamic
acid, it is a water-soluble B complex vitamin.
Folic acid is one of the most chemically complicated
vitamins, with a three-part structure that puts special
demands on the body's metabolism, the three primary
components of folic acid are called PABA, glutamic acid
and pteridine.
Folate is found naturally in food, Folic acid is the
synthetic form of folate which is added to fortified
foods and drinks, or is taken as a vitamin supplement.
The key functions of folic acid as a vitamin is to allow
for complete development of red blood cells. In addition
to its support of red blood cell formation, it also
helps maintain healthy circulation of the blood throughout
the body by preventing build-up of a substance called
homocysteine, and helps maintain normal levels of this
amino acid.
It may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment
of Anemias (especially megaloblastic anemia),
Atherosclerosis, Alcoholism, Hyperhomocysteinemia, Neural
tube defects, etc.
