Griseofulvin is an antifungal medicine used to treat
fungal infections of the skin, hair, scalp or nails.
Griseofulvin works by binding to a protein called keratin
as it forms in the cells of the nail bed, hair follicles
and skin. It doesn't kill fungal infections that are
established in these areas, but instead prevents fungal
cells from infecting new keratin that grows. It does
this by preventing fungal cells from growing and multiplying.
The infection clears up as the infected keratin dies
and is shed from the body, leaving the new healthy keratin.
This can take a few weeks for skin infections, to up
to a year for toenails.
