Levodopa is an intermediate
in dopamine (an important neurotransmitter) biosynthesis,
It is decarboxylated to dopamine by the enzyme aromatic-L-amino-acid
decarboxylase. Levodopa is used as an anticholinergic
drug and used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease
which is associated with the reduced production of dopamine
by the brain. Levodopa is not a cure for Parkinson¡¯s,
it only offers relief of symptoms associated with it.
It is used sometimes in combination with carbidopa.
