Chemical Name: pyrazine-2-carboxamide
Molecular Formula: C5H5N3O
Molecular Weight: 123.11
Chemical Structure:
Pyrazinamide, the pyrazine
analogue of nicotinamide, is an antituberculous agent.
It is a highly specific agent having a bactericidal
effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, it is only used
in combination with other drugs such as isoniazid and
rifampicin. Pyrazinamide is effective against persisting
tubercle bacilli within the acidic intracellular environment
of the macrophages.
It has no activity against other mycobacteria (Mycobacterium
bovis and Mycobacterium leprae are innately resistant
to pyrazinamide) or micro-organisms in vitro.
