Simvastatin is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. It is a powerful lipid-lowering drug (hypolipidemic drug) that is derived synthetically from a fermentation product of Aspergillus terreus. It can decrease low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels by up to 50%.
It is used to control hypercholesterolemia and to prevent cardiovascular disease.
