Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, thiamin and aneurin, is one of the B vitamins. Thiamine is the currently accepted name for vitamin B1 in the US. Aneurin is still widely used in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom.
Vitamin B1 is essential for neural function and carbohydrate metabolism. A severe Vitamin B1 deficiency results in Beriberi which is a nerve and heart disease. In less severe deficiency, nonspecific signs include malaise, weight loss, irritability and confusion.
