Chemical Structure:
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble
vitamin. There are three forms of vitamin B6: the alcohol
-- pyridoxine (previously known as pyridoxol), the aldehyde
¨C pyridoxal and the amine ¨C pyridoxamine, they are transformed
within the body to pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, which acts
as a coenzyme and is the metabolically active form.
Pyridoxine is the form that is given as vitamin B6 supplement,
It is often used as 'pyridoxine hydrochloride'.
Vitamin B6 is necessary in the processes to metabolize
proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, to make hormones
and neurotransmitters, and to support the immune system.
It also plays a role in the production of normal, healthy
red blood cells and some of the neurotransmitters needed
for proper nervous system function. In conjunction with
folic acid and cobalamin, it acts to reduce homocysteine
levels, thus lowering the risk of developing heart disease.
Vitamin B6 deficiency may cause convulsions in infants,
anemia, dermatitis and nerve damage.
