Magnesium carbonate occurs in nature as the mineral magnesite and is an important source of elemental magnesium. It can also be synthesized artificially by magnesium hydroxide slurry and carbon dioxide.
Magnesium carbonate can be used in food as acidity regulator, anticaking agent and colour retention agent. In pharmaceutical, magnesium carbonate is mainly used as antacid to neutralizes hyperacidity in the stomach and as a laxative in bowels. It is effective in the treatment of dermatitis of the external auditory passage. it is also a valuable antidote to counteract the effects of phosphorus-poisoning in the throat.
