Mannitol is a sugar alcohol
or a polyol which presents in many plants, e.g. conifers,
seaweed and mushrooms. It is commercially produced from
glucose (dextrose). It is used in bakery and confectionery
products as anti-caking agent, low-calorie sweetener
(It does not promote tooth decay), bulking agent, etc.
Mannitol and sorbitol are isomers, mannitol has a tendency
to lose a hydrogen ion in aqueous solutions, which causes
the solution to become acidic.
In pharmaceutical, Mannitol is used as an osmotic diuretic
to prevent and treat acute renal failure, to promote
excretion of toxic substances, to reduce both intracranial
pressure and intraocular pressure, to eliminate hydrocephalus.
It also can prevent arteriosclerosis, meningitis and
have certain effect on treating diabetes. It can be
used as excipient and filler for tablets.
Mannitol is also used in toothpastes, mouthwashes, cough
syrups and throat lozenges.
