Sodium bicarbonate is primarily used as raising agent/leavening agent/bulking agent in cooking (baking) and as propellant of CO2 in carbonated drinks, where it reacts with other components to release carbon dioxide.
It is also used as an antacid to treat acid indigestion and heartburn, as an anti-fungal for dandruff caused by fungus. It is also a key material used in hemodialysis.
