CAS No: 107-35-7
Chemical Name: 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid
Molecular Formula: C2H7NO3S
Molecular Weight: 125.14
Chemical Structure:
Taurine is a derivative of
cysteine (sulfur-containing amino acid). It is an oxidized
sulfur-containing amine, not an amino acid due to lack
of carboxyl group. It may be called an amino sulfonic
acid. It is particularly abundant in oysters, mussels,
bovine bile and human breast milk.
Taurine is mainly used in infant formula to make it
more like human milk (cow's milk is deficient in taurine),
as it is thought to be important in infant brain and
retinal development. Taurine is also used in many functional
drinks, and is often used in conjunction with caffeine.
In medicine, taurine is contained in some drugs for
common cold, fever, neuralgia, tonsillitis, bronchitis,
rheumatic arthritis, eye disease and medicine poisoning.
It is also known as it reduces blood sugar level.
