Molecular Formula: C5H12O5

Chemical Structural:
Xylitol is a white crystalline
powder that is odorless, with a pleasant, sweet taste.
It is a 5-carbon sugar alcohol (anti-microbial, preventing
the growth of bacteria) found in many fruits and vegetables.
For commercial use, it is manufactured from xylan hemicellulose
sources such as Birch trees, cane bagasse and corncob/stalk.
Xylitol is roughly as sweet as sugar (sucrose) but with
40% fewer calories and reducing the development of dental
caries (cavities). It is used as a substitute for refined
sugar. It is a popular ingredient in foods, such as
chewing gum, gum drops and hard candy, and in pharmaceuticals
and oral health products such as throat lozenges, cough
syrups, children's chewable multivitamins, toothpastes
and mouthwashes.
