Molecular Formula: C6H12O6 C6H12O6¡¤H2O
Molecular Weight: 180.16 198.18
Chemical Structure:
Glucose, a monosaccharide,
is an important carbohydrate in biology. The living
cell uses it as a source of energy and metabolic intermediate.
Glucose is one of the main products of photosynthesis
and starts cellular respiration in both prokaryotes
and eukaryotes.
Two stereoisomers of the aldohexose sugars are known
as glucose, only one of which (D-glucose) is biologically
active. This form (D-glucose) is often referred to as
dextrose monohydrate. The mirror-image of the molecule,
L-glucose (CAS No: 921-60-8), cannot be metabolized
by cells in the biochemical process known as glycolysis.
Glucose is used as sweetener and nutrient agent in food,
it is widely used in bakery products, biscuits, alcoholic
beverages, canned products, confectionary, meat industry,
frozen desserts, etc; it is also used as vegetable preservative
antistaling agent to keep the vegetables fresh. It is
also used in pharmaceuticals (dextrose monohydrate is
mainly used as oral medicine, dextrose anhydrous is
mainly used as injection and intraveous drip).
